Claude for Small Business: what the plugin does and what it needs from your website

Anthropic shipped a plugin that runs payroll planning, month-end close, lead triage and growth campaigns from inside Claude. Here is what is in it, what it will not reach, and how to get your business ready for it.

Claude for Small Business is a plugin from Anthropic, released on 13 May 2026, that connects Claude to the tools a small business already runs on and ships a set of ready-made workflows for finance, operations, sales, marketing, HR and customer service. It installs into Claude Cowork, Anthropic's desktop app, with a single toggle. Anthropic lists 15 workflows and 15 skills at launch.

It matters because it is the first time an AI vendor has packaged the boring, valuable jobs of running a business, chasing invoices, closing the month, triaging leads, into something an owner can switch on without a developer. It also makes very clear where the limits are: Claude can only act on systems it can reach.

This guide covers what the plugin actually contains, which tools it connects to, where it falls short for an Australian business, and what it needs from your website before the sales and marketing workflows have anything to work with.

What is in the plugin

The plugin has three layers: connectors that give Claude access to your tools, skills that teach it how to do a specific job well, and workflows that chain skills and connectors into a task you run with one command. Anthropic's plugin page lists the workflows as slash commands inside Cowork.

  • /plan-payroll: forecasts cash and chases overdue invoices before payroll runs.
  • /close-month: reconciles the books and writes a profit and loss narrative.
  • /run-campaign: runs a growth campaign end to end, with assets produced in Canva.
  • /monday-brief: a start-of-week snapshot of cash, sales, pipeline and the top three things to do.
  • /smb-onboard: the setup workflow that connects your tools and learns the business.

Underneath those sit skills such as cash-flow forecasting, margin analysis, lead triage, invoice chasing, contract review, customer sentiment, tax preparation and a hiring packet builder. If you read our guide to Claude marketing skills, these are the same idea: a written procedure the model follows, packaged by Anthropic rather than the community.

What it connects to

The plugin page names QuickBooks, PayPal and HubSpot as the primary connectors, with Canva, Docusign, Gmail or Outlook, Slack, Stripe and Square as optional. Anthropic's launch announcement also lists Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. Anthropic notes that most workflows degrade gracefully when a connector is missing, which in practice means the workflow runs with less data rather than refusing.

Notice what the list is: accounting, payments, CRM, design, signatures, email, chat. Every one of them is a system that already holds structured records. Claude does not learn your business from your website. It learns it from the tools where your invoices, contacts and payments live as data.

The Australian gap

The connector list is built around the American small business stack. QuickBooks is the accounting connector. Most Australian small businesses run Xero or MYOB, and neither is on the launch list. The finance workflows, payroll planning, month-end close, cash forecasting, depend on the accounting connector more than any other. Without it, they degrade to whatever Claude can see in PayPal, Stripe and your inbox.

That is not a reason to ignore the plugin. Lead triage, customer sentiment, contract review and the campaign workflow do not need the ledger. And connector lists grow. But go in knowing that the headline finance features assume a tool you may not use, and plan around HubSpot, Stripe and email first.

What it needs from your website

The plugin never touches your website. It reaches HubSpot, so lead triage works on contacts in HubSpot. If your website's enquiry form sends an email to a mailbox and nothing else, those enquiries are invisible to the workflow until someone retypes them. The same applies to bookings, quotes and orders. The sales and marketing half of the plugin is only as good as the flow of data from your site into the tools it can see.

This is the case for an agentic ready website in one paragraph. When enquiries are records that land in your CRM automatically, when services and prices are data rather than text in a page layout, and when the site can be read from and written to by your own systems, tools like this plugin have something to act on. The campaign workflow can draft a landing page. Only a site you own can let an agent publish it.

  • Enquiries as records: every form submission creates a contact and a deal, not just an email.
  • Payments through a connected provider: Stripe or Square if you take payments online, so revenue is visible.
  • Content as data: services, prices and availability the workflows can quote from.
  • Ownership: accounts in your name, so you can grant and revoke access to an AI tool yourself.

How to approach it

Treat the plugin as a preview of how business software will work from now on: an assistant that reads across your tools and runs procedures you approve. Start with the workflows that need only what you already have. The Monday brief and lead triage are safe first steps. Read what the workflow produces for a few weeks before you let it send anything.

In parallel, fix the plumbing. Move enquiries into a CRM. Put payments through a provider the plugin can see. Get your website to the point where its data is reachable. Whether the tool you eventually use is this plugin, a competitor's, or agents built into your own platform, that groundwork is the same.

Key takeaways

  1. 01

Claude for Small Business bundles connectors, skills and one-command workflows for finance, sales, marketing and operations, inside Claude Cowork.

  2. 02

It acts on structured records in QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot and similar tools, not on your website.

  3. 03

Australian businesses on Xero or MYOB lose the finance workflows until those connectors exist.

  4. 04

An agentic ready website is what feeds the sales and marketing workflows: enquiries as records, content as data, accounts you own.

Frequently asked questions

Does Claude for Small Business work with Claude Code?

No. It installs into Claude Cowork, the desktop app. Claude Code has a separate plugin system. The marketing skills library we wrote about is the Claude Code equivalent for marketing tasks.

Does it connect to Xero or MYOB?

Not at launch. The accounting connector is QuickBooks. Finance workflows still run using PayPal, Stripe and email data, but with less to work from.

Can it update my website?

No. It can draft content and campaign assets through Canva, but publishing to a website is not a connector. On a platform you own, that gap can be closed with your own integration.

Is it available in Australia?

The plugin is a feature of Claude Cowork rather than a regional product, and the connectors it uses are global services. Anthropic's in-person launch tour was US only. Check the plugin page for the current install requirements.
